We have a rigorous early reading and writing curriculum across the Fox Federation. Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) is our chosen Phonics programme. The aim of ELS is ‘Getting all children to read well, quickly’. It teaches children to read by identifying the phonemes (the smallest unit of sound) and graphemes (the written version of the sound) within words and using these to read words. This is the third year of the rollout of this scheme. This year, the scheme is being rolled out to Y2 with ELS Spelling.  Some pupils in KS2 who continue require phonics support will continue using some key resources and visuals, but will follow the progression of ELS and make use of ELS Progress reading books.

Our curriculum overview is changing in response to the Department of Education’s changes to ‘Development Matters’ early years framework and our commitment inclusivity, representation and well-being. Children in EYFS and KS1 will regularly have adult-led small guided reading session with banded books. Every half term they will also look at richer texts as a whole class. Parents are updated on the curriculum every half term and in EYFS via tapestry every week. Miss Henman also runs parents’ readings and phonics workshops in Autumn and again in Spring- please check the newsletters for dates.

Fox Federation - Maths

  • At the Fox Federation we aim to:

    1. Develop a positive attitude towards  maths in which all children can be successful;
    2. Develop mathematical understanding through systematic direct teaching of appropriate learning objectives;
    3. Encourage the effective use of maths as a tool in a wide range of problem solving activities within school and, subsequently, adult life;
    4. Develop an ability in the children to express themselves fluently, to talk about the subject with assurance, using correct mathematical language and vocabulary;
    5. Develop mathematical skills and knowledge and quick recall of basic facts;
    6. Develop a range of efficient mental calculation strategies for all four operations;
    7. Be confident using written calculation methods for all four operations.
